"The team I manage is 11-year-olds. Last year we were Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions, reaching the Cal Ripken Baseball World Series. We've begun indoor hitting workouts, and I have every player use the training bat as part of the drills we do. The feedback is terrific. The grip, of course, is innovative and the kids seemed to like it immediately. There is no transition period with it, which is great. I very much like the overload concept of the heavier bat, but I believe it's effect is enhanced by the bat being shorter. It forces the kids to keep their front side closed and to stay on the ball longer. So I believe the training bat not only helps develop better bat speed, but also enhances the fundamental mechanics of hitting. We put the game bat to use for the first time recently, and it was a hit with just about everybody. Kids were comfortable with it right away. A couple of them were ready to get rid of their existing bats for the Mattingly bat after just one soft-toss session.
